She's gone crazy from aging. She isn't an armadillo (clearly), she IS dead, and she IS crazy.
Although, she is related to the present Foreststar and her friend the late Foreststar became leader instead of her. She doesn't hold a grudge though because she didn't really care who became leader in the first place.
